Elawa Farm Foundation’s mission is to steward a historic farm that enriches greater Lake County as a center for experiential learning to broaden access to education, nutritious food, and our local food system. We gather community through food and agriculture with a sustainable farm, weekly market, café, learning kitchen, farm animal program, and educational programming for youth and adults.
The Communications department leads the communication and marketing aspects of Elawa Farm Foundation, narrates the impact of our mission, and engages the community. We strive to represent each department at Elawa Farm Foundation in an equitable and inspiring way across digital and print media and present this content to the community in an inclusive and accessible manner.
Position Summary
The Communications Assistant supports the Communications Manager in implementing Elawa Farm Foundation’s marketing and communications efforts. This role assists with content creation, digital and print promotions, and social media management to help tell the Foundation’s story and enhance its visibility.
Essential Functions
Provide administrative support to the Communications Manager, including coordinating with press partners, completing applications and forms, preparing press kits, and assisting with media outreach.
Assist with the written content for multiple platforms, such as newsletters, website pages, event promotions, and printed materials, ensuring alignment with Elawa’s voice, style, and branding.
Support Elawa Farm’s social media presence by managing community engagement, responding to comments and messages, and conducting basic performance tracking to help grow audience reach and interaction.
Serve as the primary point of contact for general inquiries via the Foundation’s email account, providing responsive customer service and addressing questions related to events and other communications.
Assist in the coordination of program and event registration, including setting up online registration, managing participant and customer data, maintaining the online shop, and supporting basic reporting tasks.
Maintain and organize the digital photo archive, ensuring high-quality, accessible images are readily available for marketing, social media, and promotional use.
Distribute the internal weekly operations schedule by collecting necessary information from staff and ensuring accuracy and timely delivery to the team.
Provide limited administrative assistance to the Executive Director, including scheduling meetings and organizing files in SharePoint.
Core Competencies and Professional Qualifications
A degree in a communications, marketing, or related field with interest in content creation and audience engagement.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with sharp editing ability and a clear, consistent writing style across platforms.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Squarespace, Tock, and Canva is a plus.
Knowledge of social media platforms and management tools, as well as basic analytics and performance tracking.
Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
A proactive, service-minded attitude with the ability to respond promptly and professionally to inquiries and support customer and participant experiences.
Interest or background in agriculture, sustainability, food systems, or nonprofit work is a plus and will support mission-driven storytelling and engagement.
Status: Part-time, year-round, non-exempt
Compensation: Hourly rate is $20 at approximately 10 hours/week
Education: Possess a bachelor’s degree in a related field, preferably in Communications, Marketing, or Journalism, from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
